Citizen Science Presentation | ![]() |
![]() How partnerships in citizen science can support the future of work in Alberta Miistakis has long understood and promoted the value of citizen science which includes its ability to engage and empower individuals from diverse backgrounds to contribute to scientific research, fostering collaboration and generating data that can lead to meaningful discoveries and solutions to conservation challenges. We have used citizen science for over two decades as an approach to generating new data and engaging citizens to address grizzly bear conservation, wildlife movement across roads, amphibian conservation, urban biodiversity and beaver restoration. Recently, Miistakis, together with our long-standing partner, Krista Tremblett from Alberta Environment and Parks, presented to the Public Service Commission's AGM to offer our thoughts on how partnerships in citizen science can support the future of work in Alberta. Our talk focused on describing citizen science and providing examples of some of the great citizen science initiatives taking place across Alberta and we discussed the importance of citizen science in meeting Alberta's data and information needs. We also offered how a citizen science approach translates into specific skills and capacity requirements for the Alberta Public Service. We always welcome the opportunity to champion citizen science and to let people know how they can start thinking about becoming a citizen scientist themselves! | |
