Who can participate?

EVERYONE is invited to participate, no matter your age or experience. This project is designed to be used by anyone in the Pass.

How to participate?

There are a number of ways you can participate in Road Watch:

  1. adding your wildlife observation to Road Watch through the mapping tool or phone in hotline,
  2. participating in a formal driving survey where you are assigned a section of Highway 3 to monitor and/or
  3. contacting the Miistakis Institute to discuss other volunteer opportunities.

How do I add an observation?

Let us know if you have seen an animal crossing the road by using the interactive mapping tool and form on this web site.

If you are using the interactive mapping tool to submit your observations there are two components. On the interactive map mark where you saw the wildlife cross the road, and then fill in basic information about the crossing on the pop-up form. The information you are asked to provide includes species observed, is the animal is alive or dead, did it crossed the road or was it adjacent to the road, approximate age, number of individuals, date of observation and time of day.

The interactive map is easy to use, but if you are not familiar with using interactive mapping over the internet, a tutorial has been developed with easy to follow instructions for recording your wildlife crossing information.

If you have used interactive mapping before then select here to open the mapping tool.

How do I participate in the driving survey?

If you drive Highway 3 frequently in a regular pattern you may want to join our formal driving survey. Road Watch has developed a systematic driving survey where participants are assigned a section of Highway 3 that they are responsible for surveying. In addition, each participate is provided with an Otto Driving Companion (GPS unit with species key pad) for easy data entry. If you are interested in learning more about this option please refer to the Driving Survey Page of this website.
